Question

Six months ago I changed my status at my job from full time to part time. I elected to keep my health care benefits and was told that my monthly premium would increase and that it would increase more if I dropped below 30 hours. I almost immediately dropped below thirty hours, and HR failed to catch this. Now they want me to pay $1900 because they were paying me full time benefits and not the part time benefits for 20 hours that they were supposed to. Am I liable for something that HR failed to detect.

Answer

If you received a benefit by mistake, they are entitled to compensation. However, there are rules in place for how they can seek this compensation/reimbursement from an employee. If you want to remain employed, you should work out a reasonable repayment plan with them.
