i received an infraction for my business for $500 and didn't pay it. they turned it over to collections for $1,000 and the collection agency tacked on another $500. is this legal?
Answer
The answer is somewhere between maybe and probably. How can anyone be expected to answer this? What I can say is that is is standard procedure in collection actions to add the costs of collections for what is being sought.
If you received an infraction for your business you should have addressed it either by paying or contesting, but it is impossible to know here. Regulatory compliance can be very difficult for the small business owner especially in certain fields. You'll want to really review your business protocols and policies to ensure other infractions aren't imposed. Know that when an inspector or other enforcement official begins to think a business simply ignores rules (say by ignoring an infraction fine) the odds of repeat inspections skyrockets.
