Does a police officer have the right to run your license plate for no reason and pull you over?

Question

Does a police officer have the right to run your license plate for no reason and pull you over?

Answer

There doesn't appear to be any prerequisite for an officer to" run" someone's license plate number through the various databases available to them. They do need probable cause to pull over a car (or be part of a sobriety check where all cars are stopped) If when running the plates, they learn that the plate are for another car, or the owner is wanted, or some other indicia of a crime, that can provide the probable cause to be justified in pulling the car over.

Good luck
