Can you put 185 80 13 tires on a 19992 hatchback?

Can you put 185 80 13 tires on a 19992 hatchback?
I've put 185/70/13's on my ek4(96 hatch) and it rubbed a bit at first, but if you burn to outer coating then it should stick much better and have a bit more clearance to your side walls.
