Question

A neighbor falsely accused my son of stealing items from his property, including animals. We believe the animals actually died and no one took them period. He threatened that he would 'send him to jail if he didn't settle with him' meaning give him some money. I know that slander and defamation of character would apply but would this also be blackmail?.... and what should we do to keep his name from being tarnished?

Answer

Sounds like you should move. Absent that being an option, I would seek a consult with a local attorney. The county attorney might be willing to charge the guy with blackmail, but likely not. Civil action may be your only option.
