Do you have to take drivers ed to get a permit in North Carolina?
North Carolina requires that all drivers under the age of 18 take a local driver education course either through the public school system, if offered, or through an available commercial driving school.
Teen drivers may apply for a permit at the age of 16, with the approval of a parent or legal guardian.
