Question

My ex and I have a daughter and we currently reside in California. I cannot afford to live here and I am moving back to my parents in Vermont. I am really confused about interstate custody, and I want to be in my daughter's life. Where should I start?

Answer

You should start by obtaining a custody/visitation order prior to leaving California. If you were married you can request this with your dissolution petition, if you were not married you can request this with a petition to establish a parental relationship. The California Courts have useful information and instructions online. Good luck!
