Where are most American cars made?

Where are most American cars made?
The answer depends first on how you define an "American Car". This can mean a car from one of the American automakers -- Ford, GM, Chrysler -- or this could mean a car that is built in the USA by American workers, and using components built in this country, but built by a foreign automaker.
The Ford Motor Company has several auto manufacturing plants in the USA. The majority of their manufacturing plants are in Michigan and Ohio, but they also have plants in upstate New York, Illinois, Missouri, and Kentucky.
Like Ford, General Motors also has several auto manufacturing plants in the USA, with the bulk of them also being in Michigan and Ohio. They also have plants in Texas, Maryland, Indiana, Kansas, Tennessee, upstate New York, Missouri and of course Kentucky, where the Corvette has been built since the beginning.
The Chrysler Group also has several factories in the USA, located in 4 states - Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana. As with Ford and GM, the bulk of their facilities are in Michigan. All Jeep vehicles sold in the USA are built in the USA. The Chrysler 200, Dodge Dart, Dodge Durango, and most RAM trucks are built in the USA.
It is important to note that many cars from American automakers which are sold in the USA are not built here. Popular models like the Buick Regal, Chevrolet Equinox, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Caravan, Ford Fiesta, Ford Edge, and Lincoln MKT, are built in either Canada or Mexico.
Many cars from foreign automakers which are sold in the USA are also manufactured here:
Honda builds most of their cars for sale in the USA in factories in Ohio, Indiana, and Alabama. This includes the Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, and Pilot. These cars are built by American automakers and contain a certain percentage of parts that are also built here.Toyota builds many of it's cars in the USA, including the Camry, Avalon, Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, and Sienna. Toyota has plants in Kentucky, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, West Virginia and Indiana. The Toyota Avalon has the highest percentage of domestically produced parts of any car manufactured in the USA (85%). Nissan builds several of its cars in factories in Tennessee and Mississippi.Subaru builds the Legacy, Outback, and Tribecca at it's plan in Lafayette, Indiana.Hyundai builds "over half" the cars it sells in the USA at it's Montgomery, Alabama plant. Along with it's manufacturing plant, it also has a design center in California and an engineering center in Michigan.Kia builds the Sorrento and Optima at it's plant in West Point, Georgia. They also have a design center in California.
The easiest way to identify the country of manufacture for a car is to look at the VIN number. If the first two digits are 10-19, 1A-1Z, 40-49, 4A-4Z, 50-59, or 5A-5Z then the car was manufactured in the United States.
