Who rescues Edmond after he has escaped from Chateau d'if?
A group of sailors rescue Edmond out of the water. They are a group of smugglers, and when Emdmond gets on the boat they hear the cannon of Chateau d'If indicating that a prisoner (clearly Edmond) has escaped, but as they are not themselves French, they consider it none of their business and allow Edmond to stay on the boat with them and become a fellow sailor.
